The Mexican Cultural Institute is committed to providing education, disseminating information, and presenting the contemporary and traditional arts and culture of Mexico. Founded by the Mexican government in 1990, the Institute has transitioned to an independent nonprofit organization that serves as a valuable cultural resource for the entire community of Los Angeles.

The Institute is a nonprofit organization with a fifteen-year history promoting the richness of the Mexican art and culture, both traditional and contemporary, at its central and historical location at Plaza Olvera in downtown Los Angeles.

Our public community spaces include a Bookstore that specializes in Spanish-language books for adults and children, Mexican arts and crafts, Spanish movies and more, a Resource Center/Library that offers information on cultural activities and educational opportunities in Mexico as well as books in Spanish on all aspects of Mexican history, arts and culture, politics and economics, and an Art Gallery that presents five exhibitions a year featuring traditional and contemporary artists of Mexican heritage from Los Angeles area and Mexico. Our Community Room provides additional educational programming such as art workshops, and exhibition space for emerging artists, and a Tech Center with twelve computers to offer bilingual computer classes and free internet access to students and their families.

The Mexican Cultural Institute aims to teach the arts within a context of Mexican culture, including traditional arts and crafts of Mexico, folkloric dance and music, its language and literature, and popular holidays. Our cultural programming includes numerous festivals and celebrations presented annually free to the public such as Cesar Chavez Day, La Guelaguetza performance, Summer Film series, Hispanic genealogy Festival, Mexican Independence Day, and much more. Open six days a week free to the public, the Institute serves over 40,000 visitors per year, and is fortunate to be located at the multicultural nexus of Los Angeles- Plaza Olvera. As a destination that represents the Mexican heritage of Los Angeles back to 1781, visitors come from all over the world, and from all races, cultures and ethnicities that form the multicultural mosaic which makes Los Angeles so great.

As the Institute formally separated from the Mexican government three years ago to become an independent non-profit, it embarked on a complete re-evaluation of the organization in order to more effectively meet its mission, maximize its potential, and be recognized as a major cultural resource for United States-born Latinos, Mexican and Latino immigrants, as well as the diverse non-Latino community of Los Angeles.

The Institute welcomes collaborative activities with other organizations and communities that contribute to the rich multicultural mosaic of Los Angeles. We provide bilingual programming and information that will impact all the diverse groups that make up our constituency.
